Norfolk, Va. (Oct. 13, 2013) --- The Delaware State University volleyball team was competitive in each set but came up empty each time in a 3-0 loss to Norfolk State this afternoon. The scores were 25-22, 25-22 and 25-18.
Goda Jankauskaite led all players with 16 kills, while Coralie Jarema had 15 for the Spartans. NSU's Darcy Moore had a match-high 39 assists to go along with 10 digs.
Edarkis Branch (jr.; Los Angeles, Cal.) led Delaware State with 15 kills. Taylor Marshall topped the Hornets with 18 assists, while Sonya Inderbitzen had a team-high 10 digs.
In the first game, Norfolk State led by as many as six points before the Hornets rallied to tie the set at 21-21. DSU took its only lead of the opening game, 22-21, on a kill by Branch off a feed from Marshall.
It was the last point the Hornets would score in the game as Norfolk State took the last four to earn the win.
Game two featured six ties;Â the last at 16-16 after a kill by Branch off an assist from Natalia Mendieta. Norfolk State scored eight of the next 12 points to open up a 24-20 lead.
In game three, the Hornets led 7-2 after a Norfolk State error. The Spartans answered with a 7-1 run to take a 9-8 lead. The score was 11-11 before NSU started to pull away. The Spartans opened up their biggest lead of the game, 21-14, on a kill by Jarema.
Delaware State recorded a .167 hitting percentage in the match (28 kills/13 errors/90 attacks), while Norfolk State posted a .257 percentage (50/21/113). The Spartans won the battle of digs 44-33, while each team collected 12 blocks.
The Hornets have dropped their last 10 matches to fall to 1-14 overall and 0-5 in the MEAC North. Norfolk State improved to 7-13 and 3-2.
Delaware State returns to action on Friday (Oct. 18) at Hampton. The match gets underway at 6:00 p.m.
