Dover, Del. (Mar. 18, 2012) --- Eight Delaware State pitchers surrendered 19 hits and a season-high 13 walks in a 19-6 loss to Cornell in the series finale at Soldier Field this afternoon.
The Hornets dropped two of the three games in the series to fall to 11-8-1 this season. Cornell improved to 9-2.
Frank Hager was 4-for-4 with three runs batted in for the Big Red. Brandon Lee (3-for-4) and Ben Swinford (2-for-4) also drove in three runs for Cornell, which had 12 players with at least one hit.
Joey Babuca (1-for-3) drove in two runs for Delaware State, while Ryan Haas, Eddie Sorondo and JP Frey had two hits each for the Hornets.
Hager doubled in the game's first run and Lee had a run-scoring single off DSU starter Elliott Gardner (2-3) to give the Big Red a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
Delaware State answered with a run in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly by Babuca to cut the Big Red's lead to 2-1.
Cornell scored two runs in the fourth inning and single runs in the fifth and sixth to open up a 6-1 lead.
The Hornets scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to climb back into the game. Sorondo doubled in the first run, while Babuca had a run-scoring single in the inning. DSU also scored on a Cornell error and a fielder's choice in the sixth. Trailing 6-5, the Hornets had the bases loaded with two outs but Scott Davis grounded out off Cornell reliever Rick Marks to get out of the inning.
The Big Red put four runs on the board in the seventh inning to pen up a 10-5 lead. Swinford had a two-run double and Hager brought in a run on a bases loaded walk in the inning.
Delaware State scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a double play with the bases loaded to pull to within 10-6, but Cornell scored five runs in the eighth and four in the ninth to put the game away.
The Hornets return to action on Tuesday (Mar. 20) at home against Delaware. Game time is 3:00 p.m. at Soldier Field.
