DOVER, Del. - After taking control of the first set, the Delaware State University volleyball team couldn't recover the momentum as the Hornets fell, 1-3 (25-17, 16-25, 19-25, 22-25) to Coppin State at Memorial Hall Sunday afternoon.
Following a 15-kill career-high performance on Friday, sophomore Edarkis Branch (Los Angeles, Calif.) tallied 12 with a .267 attack percentage for DSU (4-12, 1-3 MEAC). Branch added six digs and a block assist in the loss.
Down, 11-12, in the first set, the Hornets took six of the next seven points to take the 17-13 lead. Delaware State would never look back as senior Laisha Davis (Riviera Beach, Fla.) finished the Eagles off with a service ace for the 25-17 win.
The Hornets held things close in the second set, trading points with Coppin State up until the 13-13 mark. The Eagles outscored DSU, 12-3, in the final moments of the set to take the 25-16 victory. CSU's Ariel Richards finished the Hornets with three straight kills in the set to tie the match at 1-1.
Coppin State held the edge and momentum throughout the entire third set, eventually winning, 25-19. The Eagles led by as much as nine points in the set and recorded a match-high 16 kills.
DSU looked as though they would make a comeback in the fourth set, going up 11-8 early in the game with a kill from junior Brooke Redmon (Warrenton, Va.). CSU responded with an11-1 run to go up, 19-12. With freshman Alena Jung (Kunsterdingen, Germany) serving, the Hornets scored three straight points to come within 22-24, but the Eagles finished DSU at 25-22 to take the fourth set and match.
Coppin State (7-9, 3-2 MEAC) received 14 kills from Cindy Okpegbue while Bianca Chatman added 11 for the Eagles.Â
The Hornets were outblocked in the game, 13-7.
Junior Jessica Croucher (Brisbane, Australia) led DSU with 10 digs while senior Bel Fakaosi (Salt Lake City, Utah) collected 28 assists.
Delaware State continues their homestand Friday with a 7 p.m. match against MEAC foe Norfolk State.
