HORNETS WRAP UP MEAC PLAY WITH LOSS TO BCU

Daytona Beach, Fla. (May 8, 2011) ---  Delaware State left 12 men on base in a 9-4 loss to Bethune-Cookman in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC)  finale for each team at Jackie Robinson Park this afternoon. The first place Wildcats finished the MEAC season with an 18-0 record (32-20 overall), while the second place Hornets wrapped up league play at 11-7 (23-24 overall).

Alejandro Sanchez was 3-for-3 with a homer and three runs batted in to lead the Wildcats.

Bethune-Cookman opened the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the second inning off Delaware State starter Elliot Gardner (4-6).

The Hornets got on the board when Eddie Sorondo singled home Scott Davis in the top of the third inning.     

Bethune-Cookman scored three runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by Sanchez's solo homer, and added two runs in the fifth to take a 9-1 lead.

Delaware State scored two runs in the sixth to cut the Wildcats' lead to 9-3. DJ Miller singled in a run and Troy Drummond drove in a run on a fielder's choice.

The Hornets closed out the scoring with a run on a bases loaded walk to Trey DeRouen with two outs in the eighth inning. DSU left the bases loaded in the eighth and stranded two runners in the second, third and sixth innings.

Keith Hernandez, Peter Broehl and Miller had two hits each for the Hornets. Davis had a single and a walk in two plate appearances to up his season average to .439.

The Hornets will return action at Navy on Wednesday (May 11). Game time is 4:00 p.m. in Annapolis, Md.
