HORNETS TOO MUCH FOR MIDSHIPMEN

Annapolis, Md. (May 11, 2011) --- Ryan Haas pitched seven strong innings and Troy Drummond had three hits and two runs batted in to lead Delaware State to a 14-1 victory over Navy at Max Bishop Stadium this afternoon.

The win evens DSU's record at 24-24 this season, while Navy, the 2011 Patriot League regular season champ, fell to 29-21-1.

Haas (3-0) allowed six hits and one run, while striking out four, to earn the win in his first start since April 25. He also had two hits, including a double, and scored a run in four at bats.

Delaware State opened the scoring with three runs on just one hit in the top of the first inning. The first run scored when Eddie Sorondo reached base on a fielder's choice. The Hornets added two runs in the inning when Jose Portela reached on an error.

DSU scored two runs in the second inning to open up a 5-0 lead. Keith Hernandez drove in the first run on a ground out and the second run crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

The Hornets stretched their lead to 10-0 after putting five runs on the board in the third. The big hit in the inning was a two-run single by Drummond. Another Navy error allowed a third run to score on the play.   Hernandez drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and DSU scored its fifth run of the inning on a passed ball.

The Hornets added two runs in the seventh to take a 12-1 lead. DJ Miller doubled to lead off the inning. He advanced to third on a single by Drummond and later scored on a balk. Hernandez followed with a single to score Drummond.

Delaware State closed out the scoring with two runs in the eighth. Brandon Crist singled in a run and Trey DeRouen had a run-scoring double in the inning.

Derek Marshallsea and Tony Gatto each pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the Hornets.

Delaware State will return to action with a three-game series at East Carolina this weekend. The teams will play single games on Friday (7:00 p.m.), Saturday (2:00 p.m.) and Sunday (1:00 p.m.) in Greenville, N.C.
