DOVER, Del. - The Delaware State University volleyball team sent their four seniors off on a high note Sunday afternoon at Memorial Hall as they swept Norfolk State, 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 26-14) in the final regular season game of the year.
The Hornets honored seniors Jessica Barnes (Alpharetta, Ga.), Sonja Banicevic (Zagreb, Croatia), Elisa Herrmann (Andernach, Germany) and Megan McDonald (Spring, Texas) before the exciting match.
The Hornets (5-20, 4-8 MEAC) didn't take the three sets easily from the Spartans; however, as NSU (9-16, 5-7 MEAC) led the entirety of the third set and looked as though they were to force a set four. The set saw four ties, but Del State never took a lead until a 4-0 run put them up, 26-24. The Spartans held their largest lead at 10-5 with two kills from Charlotte Armstead and two aces from Adriana Ramos.Â
An attack error from Ramos tied things at 22-22 before she responded with a kill to put Norfolk State up, 23-22. A bad set from Bel Fakaosi (Salt Lake City, Utah) put the game at set point at 24-22 to force a Delaware State timeout. The Hornets responded with a kill from sophomore Jessica Croucher (Brisbane, Australia) and block from freshman Theresa Schieder (Munich, Germany) and junior Laisha Davis (Riviera Beach, Fla.) to tie things at 24-24.
Coming out of a NSU timeout, Ramos collected another attack error and the Hornets closed things out with a Croucher kill.
In the first set of the afternoon, Del State held a set-high lead of six points three times. A kill and block from Davis gave the Hornets a 21-15 lead before the Spartans went on a 4-0 run to come within 21-19. Kills from Fakaosi and Schieder gave the Hornets the 25-21 victory.
Things weren't as close in the second set as Norfolk State posted a match-low .029 attack percentage (11 kills/10 errors/34 total). The two teams kept things close at the beginning of the set, but a 6-0 run from the Hornets gave them a 17-10 advantage and the momentum to win, 25-19.
Croucher posted a match-high 11 kills with a .421 attack percentage (three errors/10 total) in the win. Barnes led the way with eight digs while Fakaosi contributed 29 assists.
The Spartans were led by Ramos' 10 kills and Tracey Copley's eight digs.Â
