HORNETS SPLIT TWIN BILL TO TAKE SERIES FROM HAWKS

Princess Anne, Md. (April 2, 2010) --- Delaware State scored 11 runs in the fifth inning en route to an 18-8 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore in the first game of a doubleheader this afternoon.

The Hawks won the second game, 5-3, although the Hornets took the series two-games-to-one.

In the opener, Delaware State led 5-2 before blowing the game open in the fifth. The Hornets sent 15 batters to the plate in the inning. Scott Davis drove in four runs in the inning, including a three-run double to give DSU a 16-2 lead. Tony Gatto doubled in a run, while Warren Stimpson and Abe Eubank added run-scoring singles in the fifth. The Hornets also scored when Jose Portela was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and on a bases loaded walk to Joey Babuca.

Davis was 1-for-3 with five runs batted in, while Keith Hernandez had three hits and two RBI in five at-bats. Stimpson drove in three runs in the opener.

In the nightcap, John DeChamps tossed a complete game for the Hawks. He allowed six hits and three runs, while striking out three, in seven innings.

The Hornets opened the scored when Hernandez singled with one out, stole second, and came around to score on a double by Eubank.

Delaware State trailed 3-1 when Stimpson led off the fifth with a walk and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Eubank to pull to within a run.

Maryland-Eastern Shore led 5-2 when the Hornets came to bat in the top of the seventh. Stimpson doubled with one out, and crossed the plate when Davis followed with a double to cut the Hawks' lead to 5-3. DeChamps retired the next two batters, Hernandez and Eubank, to secure the win for the Hawks.

Davis had two of the Hornets' six hits.
