GARDNER PITCHES HORNETS PAST RATTLERS

Dover, Del. (Apr. 18, 2010) --- Freshman Elliot Gardner tossed his first complete game and Mike Rizzuto drove in three runs to lead Delaware State to an 11-4 win over Florida A&M in MEAC baseball this afternoon.

The Hornets swept the three-game series to improve to 11-19 overall and 7-2 in the MEAC.

Gardner (Middletown, Del.), allowed five hits and three earned runs, while striking out a career-high eight, to improve to 3-2 on the season.

Delaware State opened the scoring when Abe Eubank doubled with two outs, and came around to score on a double by Rizzuto in the bottom of the first inning.

The Hornets added two runs in the third. Ryan Haas drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly and Jose Portela singled in the other to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead. 

Delaware State opened up a 6-0 lead after scoring three times in the fourth. Florida A&M starter Eric Cotton (0-3) allowed two runs to score on wild pitches and Tony Gatto knocked in DSU's third run of the inning on a fielder's choice. Cotton threw seven wild pitches in the contest. 

Rizzuto singled in two runs in the fifth to put the Hornets ahead 8-0. DSU added three runs in the seventh, highlighted by Warren Stimpson's two-run single, to open up an 11-2 lead. 

Eubank was 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles. He was 6-for-11 with two homers and three doubles in the series. Rizzuto had seven RBI in the three-game set.

The Hornets will return to action on Wednesday (Apr. 21) at Georgetown. Game time is 7:00 p.m. in Bethesda, Md.
