Newark, Del. (Mar. 16, 2010) --- Delaware State and the University of Delaware renewed their baseball rivalry today, with the Hens sweeping a doubleheader at Bob Hannah Stadium. UD took the opener 10-4, and completed the sweep with a 6-0 win in the nightcap.
In game one, Josh Dean drove in three runs and Eric Buckland tossed 3.1 innings of hitless relief to lead the Hens. Delaware jumped out in front with six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Pat Dameron singled in the first two runs, while Todd Menchaca added a two-run double later in the inning.
The Hornets climbed back into the game with four runs in the top of the fourth. The rally began when Delaware starter Ryan Rorick walked the first three batters in the inning. After Jose Portela struck out, Brandon Crist singled to right field, scoring Ryan Haas and Troy Drummond to cut the Hens' lead to 6-2. After a walk to Keith Hernandez to load the bases again, Mike Rizzuto drew a two-out walk to score DSU's third run. The Hornets scored their fourth run of the inning on a Delaware error. Buckland came on in relief for the Hens to retire the Hornets with two men on base.
Delaware opened up a 7-4 lead with a run in the fifth, then tacked on three more runs in the sixth. Dave Anderson smacked a solo homer and Dean added a two-run double in the sixth.
Buckland was the winner pitcher for the Hens. He did not allow a hit, while striking out three, after entering the game in the fourth inning.
Scott Davis had two of Delaware State's four hits.
Haas was tagged with the loss for the Hornets.
In the nightcap, Michael Lindino hurled a two-hit complete game for the Hens. Delaware State managed just a lead off single by Jose Portela in the third and a one-out single by Abe Eubank in the seventh off Lindino, who struck out seven and walked two to improve to 2-1 on the season.
The Hens scored all they needed in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by Steve Ulaky. Delaware added four runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run homer by Dean.
The doubleheader sweep gives Delaware a 5-7 record on the season, while the Hornets fell to 3-9.
The Hornets and Hens are scheduled to meet again on April 13 at DSU's Soldier Field.
Delaware State will play its 2010 home opener this Saturday against St. Peter's. The doubleheader begins at 12:00 p.m. at Soldier Field.
