Savannah, Ga. (Feb. 26, 2010) --- Tony Gatto hit a grand slam, and the Hornets scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning in Delaware State's 12-10 baseball victory over Savannah State this afternoon. Earlier in the day, the Hornets dropped an 8-6 decision to Florida A&M in the opener of the Savannah State Tournament.
In the Savannah State win, the Hornets trailed 2-0 when Gatto homered with the bases loaded to give the Hornets a 4-2 lead. C.J. Bell,
Mike Rizzuto and
Ryan Haas scored ahead of Gatto. DSU stretched its lead to 6-2 on run-scoring singles by Brandon Crist and
Keith Hernandez later in the inning.
Savannah State scored a run in the fourth and three in the sixth to tie the game at 6-6. The Tigers added four runs in the top of the seventh to take a 10-6 lead.
Delaware State used some timely hitting and took advantage of two SSU errors to regain the lead. A bases loaded walk to Hernandez produced the Hornets' first run of the inning. The Hornets tied the score at 10-10 on a three-run throwing error by Savannah State. Rizzuto singled in a run to give Delaware State an 11-10 lead. He later scored on another SSU error for the 12th DSU run.
Jordan Elliot (1-1) was the winning pitcher for the Hornets, while Josh Harris was credited with a save.
In the Florida A&M contest, the Rattlers scored single runs in the sixth and eighth innings after the Hornets tied the game at 6-6.
Delaware State trailed 2-1 before scoring three times in the third to take a 4-2 lead. Gatto produced a run on a sacrifice fly and the Hornets scored two more on a Savannah State error.
The Tigers led 6-4 before another DSU comeback.
Jose Portela led off the sixth with his first home run of the season to pull the Hornets to within 6-5. Delaware State tied the score on a Savannah State passed ball.
DSU will play its final game in the Savannah State Tournament on Saturday morning against Norfolk State.
