DSU BASEBALL FALLS TO LA SALLE, 12-2

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (March 25, 2009) ? The Delaware State Baseball Team (8-10-1) fell to the La Salle Explorers (9-10), 12-2, on Wednesday, March 25 at Hank DeVincent Field. Allowing 18 hits and committing three errors, the Hornets suffered their second loss of the season to the Explorers.

Scoring two runs on six hits, DSU dropped to 8-10-1 on the season and 0-1-1 away from Soldier Field.

Mike Rizzuto led the way for Delaware State, batting 2-for-4 and scoring both of the Hornet's runs in the contest. The 5-foot-10 junior recorded his third double of the 2009 season. Also going 2-for-4 from the plate was first baseman Ross Babineaux, who maintained his team-leading average at .508 on the season.

Making his first start of the season, Anthony Gibbons (0-1, 1.84 ERA) was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs (no earned) on five hits while striking out five in four innings of action.

La Salle had a big day offensively as six Explorer batters had multiple-hits in the contest. T.J. Chism and John Malloy each registered three RBI and scored two going 3-for-5 on the day. Brian Meagher registered three hits for the Explorers, scoring three runs in the game.

Kevin Christy earned his first win of the season, allowing one run on four hits while striking out four in six innings pitched.

La Salle scored three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-0 lead. The Hornets responded with a run in the top of the fifth with a RBI single by Wynton Weather. However, the Explorers tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 7-1. Three more runs in the bottom of the sixth put the game out of reach as La Salle held a 10-1 lead through six. Two runs scored in the bottom of the eighth as DSU fell behind, 12-1. The Hornets added one run in the top of the ninth as Ryne Mailen drove in Rizzuto to make it a 12-2 game.

The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Hornets and marked the second-straight, double-digit loss to La Salle this season (15-4 on Wednesday, March 18 at Soldier Field).

Delaware State hosts the UMES Hawks in a three-game, conference series beginning Saturday, March 28. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
