PERKINS SHUTS DOWN SEAHAWKS AS DSU WINS, 9-1

DOVER (March 20, 2009) ? Senior Dan Perkins pitched a four-hit complete game versus the Wagner (5-4) to lead the Delaware State Baseball Team (6-8-1) to a 9-1 win over the Seahawks on Friday, March 20 at Soldier Field. Perkins struck out seven batters en route to the senior's first victory of the 2009 season.

 

Perkins (1-2, 4.07 ERA), who faced 36 batters, held the Seahawks to just one run on four hits in nine innings of action. The Newark, Del., native improved his ERA to 4.07 and increased his strikeout total to 18 this season. Perkins held Wagner to a .129 average on the day (4-for-36) as the opposition's season batting average versus the right-hander dropped to .228.

 

Offensively, the Hornets rattled off nine runs on 13 hits while committing no errors. Centerfielder Troy Drummond finished the afternoon batting 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. The 5-foot-11 outfielder crushed his first home run of the season with a blast over the right-field fence in the bottom of the bottom of the eighth. Shortstop Jose Sanchez drove in three runs, going 2-for-4 from the plate. Junior Abe Eubank registered two doubles versus the Seahawks, hitting 2-for-3 on the afternoon with an RBI and a run scored. Outfielder Jared Lineweaver tallied three hits, going 3-for-4 with a run scored.

 

Wagner opened up the scoring with an RBI single by Jon Lucas in the top of the second. DSU responded with two runs in the bottom of the second and never looked back. RBIs by Eubank and Drummond gave Delaware State a 2-1 advantage through two innings.

 

The Seahawks got one more runner on base in the top of the third as Damian Csakai reached first after being hit by a pitch. However, Perkins retired the next 14 Wagner batters, shutting down the Seahawks as DSU continued to tack on seven more runs. The Hornets put a four spot on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth as DSU registered five hits in the inning. The Hornets added a run in the bottom of the seventh and two more in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 9-1.

 

Wagner's A.J. Pirozzi (0-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing five runs on five hits while striking out four and walking three in three and one-third innings pitched.

 

Wagner scored one run on four hits and committed three errors in the contest. The Seahawks' Joe Jamison went 2-for-4 with a run scored in the contest.  

 

Delaware State will continue its weekend series with Wagner with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 21. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
