DSU BASEBALL BATTLES NAVY TO 5-5 TIE

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (February 25, 2009) ? The Delaware State Baseball Team (3-0-1) battled the Navy Midshipmen (1-1-1) to a 5-5 tie on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at Max Bishop Stadium. Playing through 10 innings, the game was called due to darkness.

 

Never trailing in the game, the Hornets held a 4-2 lead heading into the top of the seventh. Delaware State extended its lead to three runs following a sacrifice fly by Ross Babineaux. The sac fly scored Troy Drummond. The Midshipmen responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs and tying the game a 5-all. Delaware State began to bottom of the seventh, registering two outs with runners on first and second however, could not get the final out before Navy began to chip away at the Hornet lead. With runners on first and third, two out and a 5-4 DSU advantage, pinch-hitter Jeff Bland hit an RBI double for Navy off of David Langton to draw the game even.

 

Neither team could muster any more offense for the remainder of the game as the contest was called due to darkness.

 

Off to the team's best start since the 2001 season (started 4-0), the Hornets registered five runs on 10 hits in the contest. Four Hornets had multiple-hit games, including Babineaux, who went 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and two runs scored. The Torrence, Calif., native was responsible for four of the team's five runs, driving in two and scoring two. Justin Bittner finished the contest going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Bittner registered an RBI single in the third inning to give DSU a 2-1 advantage. Jose Sanchez scored a run in following a 2-for-4 performance versus Navy. The senior infielder crossed the plate in the third, following Bittner's RBI single. Drummond went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Also recording RBIs for DSU were Wynton Weather (1-for-4) and Abe Eubanks (1-for-5).

 

Senior Dan Perkins made his first start of the season, pitching in four and one-third innings. The right-hander allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits, while striking out one. Five other Hornets took the mound, including Anthony Gibbons, who allowed no runs and no hits in two and one-third innings of relief, striking out four.

 

Navy was led by Andrew Hahn, who went 2-fo-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Navy starter Sam Long lasted three innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and struck out six.

 

Delaware State will host Maine in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 28. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
