HORNET VOLLEYBALL STINGS EAGLES FOR FINAL CONFERENCE WIN

DOVER, Del. (Nov. 8th) - Delaware State Volleyball wrapped up their best conference season in team history with a 3-1 win over Coppin State on Sunday afternoon at Memorial Gym.  With the victory, the Hornets will be the second seed from the North Division at the MEAC Volleyball Tournament starting November 20th in Baltimore.

"I thought we didn't do what we needed to today," said head coach Renee Arnold, who has already surpassed last season's win total of 16 with one regular season and the conference tournament still to play.  "We were inconsistent, and our outside hitters need to perform better.  I thought Erica (Tajchman) did play well, but we need the rest of our team to step up.  The tournament is what matters now, and we need to play our best ball of the season right about now."

The first set saw the Hornets with their most dominating performance of the season, winning 25-7 by hitting 13 kills against 3 errors on 20 attacks, and siding out at a perfect rate of seven for seven.  DSU (18-12, 8-2 MEAC) was also dominating defensively, holding the Eagles to -.105 for the frame.

But the second set saw the script flipped by Coppin (1-29, 0-10 MEAC), who pulled out to an 8-4 lead early.  The Eagles would have 14 kills against just three errors during one of their most productive sets of the season, outhitting the Hornets .355 to .226.  Yolanda Reid was a perfect four of four on attacks to lead all players.

The third and fourth sets would see the Hornets able to hold their home court, holding CSU to a .015 average for the two sets.  For the match the outside hitter Tajchman was the leader from the outside, picking up 13 kills and 13 digs for the match, one of two double-doubles for the Hornets along with right side Sarah Wheatcroft with 10 kills and 12 digs.  Defense would be the difference, as DSU outdug CSU 59-36, and outblocking the Eagles 8.0-6.0.

The Hornets are back in action Friday evening at 7 p.m. when they take on North Carolina Central.  It will be Senior Night for the Hornets lone senior, and Delaware State's all-time leader in kills, Cassandra Joyner
