Dover (May 3, 2008) --- Josh Schmidt tossed a five-hit complete
game to lead Delaware State to a 5-2 win over Bethune-Cookman in the second
game of a doubleheader at Soldier Field Saturday. The Wildcats won the opener
6-4. The Hornets' game two triumph was Bethune-Cookman's first MEAC loss of the
season, and snapped the Wildcats' 27-game win streak in league regular season
contests. Schmidt allowed just five hits to the Wildcats, which outscored
opponents 190-46 in their first 16 MEAC games this season. The Hornets scored
all the runs they needed in the third inning. DSU scored three runs on three
hits, with the help of two BCU errors in the frame. The Hornets opened up a 4-0
lead on back-to-back doubles by Jarrett Bibb and Wynton Weather in the fourth. Bethune-Cookman
scored two runs in the top of the fifth to pull to within 4-2. Delaware State closed out the scoring when Jose
Sanchez led off the fifth with a double, and came around to score on a
sacrifice fly by Jarrett Bibb. Bibb (2-for-2) and Sanchez (2-for-4) had two
hits each for the Hornets. The victory also allowed the Hornets (11-5) to maintain a one game lead over Florida A&M (10-6) for second place in the MEAC standings. Bethune-Cookman (16-1) has already clinched the regular season title.
In game one, Bethune-Cookman scored four runs in the seventh
inning to snap a 2-2 tie, then held on for the victory. The Wildcats opened the
scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. The first run scored on a
wild pitch by DSU starter JR McAllister, and the second crossed the plate on a
groundout. The Hornets scored two runs without benefit of a hit to tie the
score in the bottom of the fifth. Jamie Friel and Ryne Scheiwe scored on
Bethune-Cookman errors to make a 2-2 game. Bethune-Cookman regained the lead
with four runs after two were out in the top of the seventh. Aaron Patterson
singled in the first run and the second run crossed the plate on a bases loaded
walk. The Wildcats opened up a 5-2 lead when Mark Brooks drove in the third run
of the inning on a infield single, and the final run scored on a wild pitch by DSU
reliever Jose Portela. The Hornets pulled to within 6-4 on a two-run single by
Friel in the last of the eighth. DSU had the tying runs on base with two out,
but Chris Kidd hit into a force out to end the threat. Hiram Burgos (8-1) was
the winning pitcher for Bethune-Cookman, while McAllister (3-4) was tagged with
the loss for the Hornets.
The teams will wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday at 12:00 pm.
