DSU BASEBALL ELIMINATED FROM MEAC TOURNAMENT

NORFOLK, Va. (May 16, 2008) ? The Delaware State baseball team (16-33) was eliminated from the 2008 MEAC Baseball Tournament with a 5-1 loss to Norfolk State (23-23) on Friday night at the Marty L. Miller Baseball Field in Norfolk, Va.

The Hornets were led offensively by Ryne Mailen, who went 2-for-4 and drove in the team's lone run. Starter J.R. McAllister lasted six innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on 10 hits and striking out five Spartan batters. McAllister was saddled with the loss ? his sixth of the year. Jamie Friel relieved McAllister in the seventh inning, allowing one run on one hit, while striking out two in three innings of action.

A double by Spartan third baseman Chris Joyce gave Norfolk State a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh, DSU scored it's only run of the game when Mailen singled to left field, scoring Jose Sanchez from third. The run cut the Spartan lead to 4-1 however, Norfolk State got that run back in the top of the eighth to regain its four-run lead.

Norfolk State starting pitcher Leon Schabacker threw a complete game, allowing just one run on nine hits and striking out nine.

With the loss, the Hornets conclude the 2008 season with an overall record of 16-33 (11-7 MEAC).
