Dover (April 15, 2008) --- Towson pounded out 15 hits en route to a 9-1 win over Delaware State in a non-conference baseball contest at Schuerholz Park in Towson, Md. on Tuesday. The Tigers completed a two-game season sweep of the Hornets to improve to 19-17, while Delaware State fell to 11-21.
Towson scored at least one run in all but two innings. The Hornets, who had nine hits, were hurt by missed opportunities. DSU left 12 men on base in the contest.
Towson opened the scoring when Brian Conley doubled with two out and Greg Furmanek followed with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the first off Delaware State Mike Ingram (0-3).
The Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-0 lead. Terry Gallo drove in the first run of the inning on a fielder's choice and Conley singled across the second run.
Chris Wychock hit a solo homer off Ingram with two out in the third to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.
Towson opened up a 5-0 lead when Furmanek led off the fifth with a triple and was chased home when Steve Yarsinsky followed with a single.
Delaware State loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth but Towson reliever Charlie Cononie got Garrett Bibb to fly out to end the threat.
The Tigers stretched their lead to 7-0 when Gallo smacked a two-run homer over the left field fence off Hornet reliever Chase Korneman in the bottom of the sixth.
The Hornets left two men on base in the top off the seventh. Towson tacked on two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 9-0 lead.
Delaware State got on the board when Jamie Friel was hit by a pitch, and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Jose Portela with two out in the top of the eighth.
The Hornets left a total of nine men on base in their last four at bats.
Sanchez was 4-for-5 at the plate to raise his average to .387 for the season.
The Hornets will try to bounce back tomorrow when they visit Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
