HORNETS TAKE SERIES FROM UMES

Dover, DE --- The Delaware State baseball team defeated UMES 14-2 on Sunday in the rubber game of the three-game series in Princess Anne, MD. The Hornets improved to 6-19 overall and 2-1 in the MEAC, while the Hawks fell to 5-24 and 4-2. Jarrett Bibb and Jose Portela knocked in two runs each, while Jim Johnson had three hits to lead the Hornets. DSU also benefitted from five UMES errors. The Hornets played errorless ball in the contest. Delaware State opened the scoring with two unearned runs in the top of the first inning. UMES scored a run in the bottom of the third to pull to within 2-1. The Hornets answered with five runs in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead. Bibb had a run scoring single in the inning, which also featured two bases loaded walks. Bibb led off the seventh inning with a homer to left field to give the Hornets a 9-1 lead. Delaware State put the game away by scoring five times in the eighth. Portela had a two-run double, while Jamie Friel singled in a run in the inning. Friel pitched seven innings to earn the win. Tony Tevis pitched one inning of scorless relief.
