HORNETS/UMES SPLIT TWIN BILL

Dover, DE --- Justin Bittner drove in three runs, while Troy Drummond, Alex Carter and Jamie Friel knocked in two each to lead Delaware State to a 12-7 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore in game one of a doubleheader in Princess Anne, MD on Saturday. The Hawks won the second game 2-1 in eight innings. In the opener, the Hornets jumped in front with three in the first inning on run scoring hits by Carter, Jose Portela, Jose Sanchez. Delaware State added three more in the second on a two-run homer by Bittner and a run scoring single by Drummond to open up a 6-1 lead. DSU tacked on three more in the third to pull ahead 9-2. The Hornets opened up a 12-3 lead when Friel singled home two runs in the top of the eighth inning. Starter JR McAllister pitched 7 1/3 innings to earn the win for the Hornets. In the nightcap, UMES scored the game winning run on a throwing error in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Hornets tied the game at one when Wynton Weather tripled and crossed the plate on a ground out by Friel. Mike Roberts tossed a complete game for UMES. He allowed six hits, while striking out six in eight innings. Josh Schmidt was the tough luck loser for the Hornets. He allowed just five hits and struck out a career high 10 batters in the complete game effort. The Hornets and Hawks will wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday at UMES.
