PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland --An explosive offensive output was not enough for Delaware State on Saturday. The Hornets plated five runs, but could not hold the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks at bay, and were bested 16-5.
Eddie Del Valle (0-3) got the ball to start for Delaware State (1-9, 0-2) and took the loss.
In the batter's box, the Hornets were paced by Sebastian Paz, who went 2-for-2 on the day with a double and three RBI. Hassan Turner furnished a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets got the scoring started early, putting three runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Paz's bases-clearing double put all three runs on the board in the inning for Delaware State.
The Hornets then held the Hawks scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. S. Harwood came across to score the lone run of the inning for Delaware State, which brought the Hornets lead to 4-0.
Delaware State's lead had disappeared by the time the seventh inning arrived and turned into a 16-4 Maryland-Eastern Shore advantage, when the Hornets cut that deficit to 16-5. The ballgame ended with that seventh inning rally falling short.
