DOVER, DE --Sophomore Kieran Etwaru was mowing people down on Saturday, punching out eight Fairleigh Dickinson hitters over eight innings of work to help lead the Delaware State Hornets over the Knights 9-1.
In addition to his eight strikeouts, Etwaru went eight innings, giving up one run on six hits and walking two for Delaware State (8-17, ). Freshman Michael Lane also made an impact on the mound for the Hornets, throwing one shutout inning while allowing no hits, with no walks and two strikeouts.
At the plate, the Hornets were led by sophomore Evan Bouldin, who went 3-for-5 on the day with a home run and two RBI. Senior Kodai Yaoita put together a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 1-for-5 with a home run and an RBI. Senior Krew Bouldin also chipped in for Delaware State, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and an RBI.
The Hornets scored in six different innings on the way to victory. Delaware State broke a 0-0 tie and took the lead for good at 1-0 in the first inning The big hit for the Hornets in the inning was a two-run single off the bat of sophomore Jack Messmore. The Hornets out-hit the Knights at a 14-6 clip. Delaware State went 5-for-14 (.357) with runners in scoring position. Delaware State pitchers limited Fairleigh Dickinson to just 1-for-8 (.125) with runners in scoring position.
Delaware State pitchers faced 36 Fairleigh Dickinson hitters in the game, allowing six ground balls and nine fly balls while striking out 10. Fairleigh Dickinson was led offensively by senior J. Sierra, who went 2-for-4. Junior C. Mattioli led the Knights pitching staff, throwing four innings of two-run ball.
