BROOKVILLE, N.Y. --The Delaware State Hornets had a tough showing on Friday, falling to the LIU Sharks 8-1 despite the efforts of senior Colon, who went 2-for-4 with a double.
Sophomore Messmore (1-3) got the ball to start for Delaware State (14-19, 16-6) and took the loss. The right-hander went six innings, giving up six runs, three earned, on seven hits, allowing no walks and striking out three.
At the plate, the Hornets were led by Colon, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a double. Sophomore Bouldin furnished a standout performance as well, going 1-for-4 with an RBI.
The Hornets got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Delaware State got an RBI single from Bouldin, scoring Colon from third base. The Hornets were unable to hold the lead, as LIU scored eight times over the remaining eight innings to grab the 8-1 win. LIU was led offensively by senior Jake Mastillo, who went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Senior Garrett Yawn led the Sharks pitching staff, throwing six innings of one-run ball.
