BROOKVILLE, N.Y. --The Delaware State Hornets brought a 10-8 lead into the ninth inning, but could not hold on and fell 11-10 to the LIU Sharks Saturday.
Sophomore Bouldin (0-1) started and took the loss on the mound for Delaware State (14-20, 17-6). Freshman Etwaru started the ballgame and went six innings, surrendering three runs, one earned, on five hits, walking one and striking out three.
In the batter's box, the Hornets were led by senior Amparo, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run, a walk and two RBI. Sophomore Messmore put together a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and three RBI. Bouldin also contributed for Delaware State, putting together three hits in five trips to the plate while adding two RBI.
The Hornets got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Senior Colon came across to score the lone run of the inning for Delaware State and get them on the board.
The Sharks then tied the ballgame at one before the Hornets came back to reclaim their advantage in the second inning. The Delaware State offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of freshman Sample and a two-run single from Bouldin, which brought the score to 5-1 in favor of the Hornets.
Delaware State held LIU without a run before expanding their lead to 6-1 the following inning. The Hornets recorded a run on Amparo's leadoff home run off junior Dominic Pieto.
Delaware State kept the Sharks scoreless before expanding their lead in the fifth inning. A Messmore bases-clearing double sent in three runs in the inning for the Hornets, bringing the Delaware State advantage to 9-1.
The Hornets held LIU off the scoreboard before expanding their lead to 10-1 the following inning. Delaware State scored a run when Amparo drew a walk from junior Evan Panjwani that scored Colon. The Hornets were unable to hold the lead, as LIU scored 10 times over the remaining three innings to grab the 11-10 win. LIU was led offensively by senior Jake Mastillo, who went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and six RBI. Freshman Dominic Vassallo led the Sharks pitching staff, throwing two scoreless innings.
