DOVER, DE --The Delaware State Hornets got a boost from senior Wilfredo Mendez, who collected three hits in a 6-2 loss to the Sacred Heart Pioneers Sunday.
Freshman Rocardo Gonzalez started and took the loss on the mound for Delaware State (14-18, ). Sophomore Nathan Vidmar was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going one shutout inning while allowing one hit.
In addition to his three hits, Mendez had two doubles to lead the Hornets. Senior Jancarlos Colon compiled a standout performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with two walks. Senior Krew Bouldin also contributed for Delaware State, putting together one hit in five trips to the plate while adding two RBI.
The Hornets were trailing 5-0 in the seventh inning when they first put runs on the board. Bouldin drove in two runs for Delaware State with a single, that scored Mendez and Colon. The Hornets were unable to get any closer, as Sacred Heart added one run to their tally on the way to a 6-2 final. Sacred Heart was led offensively by Tim McGuire, who went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Elijah Foste led the Pioneers pitching staff, throwing six shutout innings.
