SUSSEX COUNTY, MASS -- Chirs Amparo collected four hits to help propel the Delaware State Hornets past the Merrimack Warriors 9-4 on Saturday.
Kieran Etwaru (5-0) started on the mound and picked up the win for Delaware State (11-17, 10-7). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on six hits, allowing two walks and striking out five.
In addition to his four hits, Amparo had a double and an RBI to lead the Hornets. Krew Bouldin furnished a standout performance at the plate as well, going 3-for-5 with a double and a walk. Jack Messmore also contributed for Delaware State, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a walk and two RBI.
The Hornets scored in six different innings on the way to victory. Delaware State broke a 0-0 tie and took the lead for good at 1-0 in the second inning on a Wilfredo Mendez walk from T. Healy that scored Bouldin.The Hornets had control of the rest of the game after moving ahead of the Warriors 1-0 in the top of the second. The Hornets out-hit the Warriors at a 15-7 clip. Merrimack was led offensively by H. Bond, who went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. C. Hegan led the Warriors pitching staff, throwing 1.1 innings of two-run ball.
