ESSEX COUNTY, MASS --The Delaware State Hornets responded from down 21-18 in the eighth inning to win in breathtaking fashion, scoring four runs in the ninth to earn a 22-21 victory over the Merrimack Warriors Friday.
Hiram Davis (5-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Delaware State (10-17, 9-7). The right-hander went two innings, giving up five runs, all of them earned, on five hits, allowing no walks and striking out three. Evan Bouldin also made an impact on the mound for the Hornets, starting the ballgame and throwing one scoreless inning while allowing no hits.
The Hornets scored in seven different innings on the way to victory. After holding the lead two different times earlier in the ballgame, Delaware State took the lead for good at 22-21 in the ninth inning on K. Bouldin's grand slam off of J. Collins. The Hornets got two home runs off the bat of Krew Bouldin. Three different Delaware State hitters drove in at least four runs. Krew Bouldin led the Hornets at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two home runs and seven RBI. Merrimack was led offensively by C. Scanlon, who went 4-for-5 with a double, two home runs and four RBI. M. Dragon led the Warriors pitching staff, throwing 0.2 scoreless innings.
