NORFOLK, Va. --The Delaware State Hornets fought back from down 4-0 in the seventh inning to take down the Norfolk State Spartans 9-4 Saturday.
Sophomore Nathan Vidmar (1-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Delaware State (7-16, 6-6). The right-hander went one shutout inning without giving up a hit, allowing one walk and striking out one. Junior Brandon Hatch also made an impact on the mound for the Hornets, throwing four shutout innings while allowing three hits, with three walks and one strikeout.
At the plate, the Hornets were paced by senior Kodai Yaoita, who went 4-for-6 on the day with a double and two RBI. Freshman Jaryn Sample furnished a noteworthy effort as well, going 3-for-6 with two RBI. Sophomore Joey Current also chipped in for Delaware State, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a double, two walks and an RBI.
The Hornets were trailing 4-0 in the eighth inning when they first put runs on the board. Delaware State's offense started clicking and put up six runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Sample.
The Spartans failed to push any runs across before the Hornets offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. which brought the Hornets lead to 9-4. The score remained 9-4 for the rest of the game, as Delaware State coasted to the win. 107 115 22 3 9 Norfolk State was led offensively by freshman Jalan Jones, who went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Sophomore Mac Yarbrough led the Spartans pitching staff, throwing five scoreless innings.
