GAME 1 | Coppin State 4, Delaware State 3
HANOVER, Md. --The Delaware State Hornets got three hits from senior Kodai Yaoita in a 4-3 loss to the Coppin State Eagles Sunday.
Freshman Ricardo Gonzalez (0-2) got the ball to start for Delaware State (4-13, 3-5) and took the loss. Freshman Kobe Head was a bright spot for the Hornets, coming out of the bullpen and throwing one shutout inning, allowing one hit, with no walks and one strikeout.
In addition to his three hits, Yaoita had an RBI to lead the Hornets. Senior Chris Amparo furnished a standout day at the plate as well, going 1-for-4 with two RBI. Senior Wilfredo Mendez also contributed for Delaware State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double and a walk.
The Hornets were trailing 4-0 in the sixth inning when they first put runs on the board. Delaware State scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Amparo. The Hornets were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame. The Hornets out-hit the Eagles at an 8-7 clip. Coppin State was led offensively by freshman Chris Marte, who went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Junior Alek Elges led the Eagles pitching staff, throwing seven innings of three-run ball.
