Frederica, Del. (Aug. 16, 2018) --- Hartford scored six second period goals en route to a 7-0 victory over Delaware State in the 2018 women's soccer opener for each team in steamy conditions at DE Turf this afternoon.
Six players scored for the Hawks. Reserve Gabriela Gamory tallied two goals late in the second period to lead the way.
Despite some early Hartford pressure and few offensive opportunities for the Hornets, the match was scoreless for the first 30 minutes.
The Hawks broke through in the 31st minute when Taylor Brown fired a shot past DSU goal keeper Leslie Fazio (sr.) from 20 yards out.
Hartford had two more shots on goals later in the period, but they were turned away. The Hawks held the 1-0 lead at the break.
The second period was scoreless for the first 14 minutes. Delaware State freshman goal keeper Franchesska Ramirez recorded saves on her first two opportunities before Hartford took control.
Bridgette Alexander beat Ramirez on a shot from 15 yards out off a feed from Samantha Nelbach in the 60th minute to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
A little more than two minutes later, the Hawks opened up a three-goal lead on a goal by Ashley Claud off a pass from Kaila Lozada.
Hartford was ahead 4-0 before scoring three times in a four-minute span late in the second period, two by Gamory, to seal the win.
Delaware State's lone shot on goal was a free kick by Alexa Gibbs (jr.) that was stopped by Hartford goal keeper Maia Perez in the 81st minute.
The Hornets will try to bounce back in their first road game of the season this Sunday (Aug. 19) at Lafayette. The contest is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Easton, Pa.
Delaware State returns home Aug. 26 at face Temple (2:00 p.m.)
