(Ormond Beach, Fla.) – The Delaware State softball team (21-22) saw its program-best 14-game winning streak come to a screeching halt Thursday evening in the MEAC Tournament with a 9-0 six-inning loss to host No. 2 Bethune-Cookman (20-27), behind five Wildcat players tallying multi-hit performances, in addition to scoring at least a run in every inning except the opening frame.
With this loss, which was its first since a 9-1 defeat at Towson on April 7, Delaware State will face No. 3 Hampton, who defeated Howard 10-1 in five-innings to keep its season alive, tomorrow morning (10 a.m.). In the two squad's regular season matchup, DSU dropped all three on the road in five innings, along with being outscored, 30-2.
For the Wildcats, who ended DSU's season with a 9-2 win in last year's MEAC Tournament, designated player Shamaria Engram led the way with a 2-for-4 performance, including a two-run RBI-triple in the third and scoring twice, whereas outfielder Kaitlin Alamprese went 2-for-2 with three RBI, two walks and a run scored. The Hornets, meanwhile, saw catcher Sandy Hawthorne (single), infielder Vanessa Washington (double), infielder Jordan Stamps and designated player Mika Lumsden (single) register the team's lone hits, as outfielder Nicole Gazzola went 0-for-3 to snap her season-long 18-game hitting streak.
In the circle, BC-U's Sabrina Anguiano (17-23), who was named this season's MEAC Pitcher of the Year, surrendered just four hits and no walks, while her lone strikeout featured outfielder Dominique Little going down swinging to end the game. DSU's Tara Tursellino (14-15), on the other hand, tossed 154 pitches in five innings of work on her way to allowing 12 hits, eight earned runs and six walks.
