DOVER, Del. — Delaware State University Director of Athletics Tony Tucker announced today the appointment of Mike Shehorn as head coach of the Hornets' Softball program. One of the most accomplished coaches in the region, Shehorn, arrives at Delaware State as the winningest coach in Wilmington University history, bringing more than two decades of experience and a sustained record of championship success to a program with its sights set squarely on the top of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and beyond.
Over 13 seasons leading Wilmington University, Shehorn compiled a career record of 411–244 (.628), including a dominant 220–72 (.753) mark in conference play. His teams captured six conference tournament championships — including three consecutive titles from 2023 to 2025 — four straight NCAA East Region Championships from 2022 to 2025, and a berth in the 2024 NCAA Division II Women's College World Series. A three-time Conference Coach of the Year, Shehorn earned his 400th career victory in 2026.
"Mike Shehorn is exactly the leader this program deserves," said Tucker. "He is a proven champion who wins at the highest level and does it the right way — with integrity, with discipline, and with a genuine investment in his student-athletes as people. Our goal is nothing short of contending for and capturing MEAC Championships, and in Coach Shehorn we have someone with the record, the standards, and the heart to take us there. This is a defining day for Hornet Softball."
Shehorn's success extends well beyond the field. Every softball team he has led at Wilmington University has finished with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 or higher, and his 2025–26 squad posted a 3.61. That commitment to the complete student-athlete is anchored in a coaching philosophy built on a simple principle: Family First — followed by competitive excellence, accountability, academic achievement, player development, leadership and service.
"I am honored and humbled to lead the Delaware State softball program," said Shehorn. "This university and this community already mean the world to my family, and to have the chance to build a champion here is a dream come true. I can't wait to get to work with our student-athletes. We are going to compete for championships, we are going to excel in the classroom, and we are going to do it together, as a family. Let's get to work."
For Shehorn, the move is a homecoming. A resident of Magnolia, Delaware, he arrives at Delaware State with deep personal ties to the University: his wife, Nicole, and daughter, Skye, are both attended DSU, and Skye was a member of the Hornet softball program from 2010 to 2013. Before his tenure at Wilmington, Shehorn led Caesar Rodney High School to a 93–70 record and two Delaware state semifinal appearances, earning Delaware State Coach of the Year honors in 2006.
A respected voice in the national softball community, Shehorn presented at the 2024 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) National Convention in Dallas and has served on multiple NCAA Division II committees, including the Head Coaches Committee and the East Region Regional Advisory Committee.
Shehorn is set to begin his coaching duties immediately.
