DOVER, Del. - The Delaware State University women's soccer team wasn't able to overcome an early Radford goal Sunday afternoon as Highlanders squeaked out a 1-0 victory at Alumni Stadium.
In the 13th minute, Radford's Julie Ruh'e turned a corner kick from Sydney Golden into the game's lone goal. On an assist from Kara Nay, Ruh'e shot the ball from 10 yards out to the upper left corner of the net to take the 1-0 lead. The goal was Ruh'e's first of the season.
Just 10 minutes later, Del State (0-3-0) looked to get on the board as a shot from freshman Morgan Durham (Clayton, N.J.) turned into a save for the Highlanders (3-2-0).
With less than 15 seconds remaining in the first half, junior Kaitlyn Schech (Abingdon, Md.) hoped to tie the game but was unsuccessful in her first of two shots on goal as Radford's Che' Brown came up with a save. Her second shot on goal came in the 75th minute off of a header.
In the 84th and 85th minutes, the Hornets saw two more shots, both wide. A corner kick in the 87th minute from Durham proved to be the last chance for Delaware State in the game.
Radford outshot DSU, 15-6, including nine shots in the second half. The Highlanders collected three corner kicks to two for Delaware State.
Sophomore Katelyn Koslosky (East Islip, N.Y.) notched seven saves (five in the second half) to three for Brown.
The Hornets next host Route 1 Rival, University of Delaware, next Sunday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available through www.DSUHornets.com.
