ORMOND
BEACH, Fla. - The Delaware State University Hornets will make
their fifth appearance in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Softball Championship
and third in six years as they came from behind and handed the Bethune-Cookman
Wildcats their first MEAC loss of the season in a 2-1 victory Friday afternoon
at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
The Hornets, who won the MEAC title in 2008,
snapped B-CU's eight game winning streak.
It was a defensive battle as the teams combined for
three runs on fifteen hits.
Freshman and All-MEAC First Team selection Ashley Davis (Seattle, Wash.) led DSU as she went 2-for-3 from the
plate with a double and run scored.
The Wildcats got on the board first as senior
Ashton Hinds tripled to right center and scored off of a sacrifice fly from
Aurelia Gamch in the bottom of the third inning.
The Hornets were relatively quiet until they stung
in the top of the fifth inning with two runs off of four hits, all with two outs
in the inning. Davis tied the game
at 1-1 after she singled to left center and a junior Leslie Pleasanton (Smyrna, Del.) smacked a double.
With pinch runner Kelsey Lewis (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) on third and pinch runner Sherelle Sheppard (Georgetown, Canada)
on first, B-CU intentionally walked 2011 MEAC Player of the Year Jordan Reid (Accokeek, Md.) to get to
senior Andrea Waters (Anchorage,
Alaska). Waters took full
advantage of the situation and singled to the shortstop as Lewis scored the
go-ahead run.
All-MEAC Second Team selection Ashlyn Campbell
earned her team-leading tenth win of the season as she allowed five hits, one
earned run and one strikeout in 5.2 innings pitched.
Allison Garcia took the loss for the Wildcats. Hinds was the lone B-CU player to tally
multiple hits as she went 2-for-3 on the day with a run scored.
DSU will take on the winner of the
Howard/Bethune-Cookman matchup on Saturday at 1 p.m. Since the tournament is double elimination, if the Hornets
lose, they will play the same opponent at 3:30 p.m. for the title.
