Dover, Del. (Apr. 20, 2011) --- Delaware State and Coppin State combined for two runs over 15 innings in a doubleheader split at the Hornets' softball field this afternoon. The Hornets won the first game 1-0 on a walk-off single by pinch hitter Bre Parr in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Eagles bounced back to take the nightcap 1-0 in eight innings.
The teams combined for three runs in the three-game series, won by the Hornets two games to one. Each game in the series was decided by a 1-0 score.
In Wednesday's opener, the game was scoreless before Delaware State broke through with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Casey Beighly led off the inning with a single. Allison Rubin, who pinch ran for Beighly, was sacrificed to second by Leslie Plesanton. After Rubin moved to third on a wild pitch, Parr singled to right to drive in the winning run.
Stephanie Sarris (7-1) pitched 1.2 innings of hitless relief to earn the win. Paige Arnold took the loss for Coppin State despite allowing just six hits in the complete game effort.
Beighly had two of the Hornets' six hits.
In the nightcap, Coppin State scored the game's only run on a Delaware State error in the top of the eighth inning.
Coppin State's Erica Washington was placed on second base to start the eighth inning under extra-inning rules. Washington was sacrificed to third, then continued home on a Delaware State throwing error.
The run snapped a 22-inning scoreless streak by DSU pitching, which had thrown back-to-back shutouts.
Coppin State's Arnold was the winning pitcher after tossing eight shutout innings in her third complete game in the last two days. She allowed 11 hits but did not allow a walk. The Hornets stranded 11 runners on base in the nightcap.
Delaware State had two runners on base on the bottom of the eighth when Arnold struck out Janelle Lukens to end the game.
Andrea Waters had three hits, while Jordan Reid and Rachel Carroll collected two each for DSU.
The loss also snapped a three-game win streak for the Hornets, who are now 25-12 overall and 7-2 in the MEAC.
Delaware State returns to action on Thursday for a non-conference game at Towson beginning at 3:00 p.m.
