Dover, Del. (Mar. 25, 2011) --- Delaware State's Stephanie Sarris and Casey Beighly combined on an eight-hit shutout and the Hornets scored the game's only runs in the fifth inning in a 2-0 win over Albany in the opening game of the Sean Savage Memorial Tournament this afternoon.
The Hornets won their eighth straight game to improve to 14-8 this season. The Great Danes fell to 3-13.
Beighly pitched 4.1 innings before being relieved by Sarris with one out and a runner at second in the fifth inning with the game still scoreless. Sarris retired the next two batters to get out of the jam.
Delaware State broke the tie with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Ashley Davis led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a single by Stephanie Martello. Andrea Waters followed with an infield single to load the bases. Davis scored the game's first run on a sacrifice fly by Tawny Reeger. Two batters later, Jordan Reid singled in pinch runner Kelsey Lewis to give the Hornets a 2-0 lead.
Sarris (2-0) pitched 2.2 shutout innings to earn the win.
Delaware State pitchers have thrown four shutouts in the last seven games.
Gina Mason was 3-for-3, while Katie Wambold had two hits for the Great Danes.
The Sean Savage Memorial Tournament continues with four games on Saturday. The Hornets will take on Colgate at 2:00 p.m. and Morgan State at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. Albany will face Colgate at 10:00 a.m. and Morgan State at noon.
