DELAWARE WOMEN?S SOCCER TOO MUCH FOR HORNETS

Dover, Del. (Aug. 22, 2010) --- Ali Miller and Shannon Kearney scored two goals each to lead Delaware to a 7-0 win over Delaware State in women's soccer at Alumni Stadium this afternoon. The contest was the season opener for the Blue Hens, while the Hornets fell to 0-2.

Delaware exploded for six goals in the second period after leading 1-0 at the break.

The Hens opened the scoring when Ilyssa Friedman fired a shot from 30 yards out past Delaware State goal keeper Courteney Haas in the 13th minute.

Delaware controlled the ball for the remainder of the first period, but Haas had seven saves in the opening frame to keep the Hornets close.

The Hens finally added to their lead when Andrea Luttio found the net off a feed by Stephanie Rinschler in the 67th minute. Anna Lenczyk added a goal about two minutes later to give Delaware a 3-0 lead.

Kearney scored the first of her two goals off a pass from Chelsea Duffy in the 70th minute to give Delaware a 4-0 advantage. Her second score gave the Hens a 6-0 lead in the 76th minute.

Miller tallied unassisted goals in the 75th and 79th minutes. She also had an assist to total five points for UD.

Delaware goal keeper Breanna Stemler was credited with the shutout. She turned away the only shot on goal by the Hornets in the second period.

The Hens enjoyed a 26-3 advantage in total shots. UD had 16 shots on goal.

Delaware State will begin a two-game Florida swing at Florida International in Miami on Friday (Aug. 27). The match gets underway at 7:00 p.m. The Hornets will visit Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday (Aug. 29).

DSU returns home on Sep. 8 against Rider (7:00 p.m.)
