Newark, Del. (Mar. 24, 2010) --- Delaware State scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning in a 3-2 win over Delaware in the second game of a doubleheader between the state's only Division I softball programs at the UD Softball Diamond this afternoon.
Delaware won the first game 8-0.
In the nightcap, Delaware State scored the tying and go-ahead runs in the top of the seventh inning, and Andrea Waters tossed a complete game to help the Hornets earn a split in the twin-bill.
The Hornets broke a scoreless tie with a run in the top of the sixth. Casey Beighly singled to lead off the inning. Pinch runner Kelsey Lewis stole second, and moved to third on a groundout by Courtney Taylor. Lewis scored on a fielder's choice by Rachel Carroll.
Delaware responded in the bottom of the inning. Michelle Grap hit her ninth homer of the season, a two-run shot, to give the Hens a 2-1 lead.
The Hens were three outs away from a doubleheader sweep when the Hornets came to bat in the top of the seventh.
Jordan Reid led off the inning with a double, and Tawney Reeger followed with a walk. Reid moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an illegal pitch. Pinch runner Jessica Langley advanced to second on the illegal pitch and to third on a ground out by Janelle Lukens. Langley crossed the plate with the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Waters.
In Delaware's half of the seventh, Cecile Egan led off the inning with a single, but Waters retired the next three batters in order to secure the win for the Hornets.
Waters allowed just five hits and struck out two batters to improve to 3-3 on the season.
Reid, Beighly and Chelsea Stern had two hits each for the Hornets in the nightcap.
In the opener, Delaware's Amanda Stacevicz struck out 11 in a four-hit shut out. Jenny Richards and Lindsay Novak drove in two runs each for the Hens.
Delaware opened the scoring with a run in the fourth. The Hens added four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to end the game due to the eight-run rule.
The Hornets are now 10-8 on the season, while Delaware is 8-14.
Delaware State returns to action this Friday with a home doubleheader against North Carolina Central. The first game begins at 2:30 p.m.
The Hornets will host the five-team Sean Savage Memorial Tournament this Saturday and Sunday. The games begin each day at 9:00 a.m. Representatives from the Epilepsy Foundation will be on hand each day to provide information and solicit funds to help support the organization's programs.
