NEWARK, DE.; (September 18th)
- The Delaware State Hornets were no match in the opener of the Route 1 Rivalry this weekend, falling 7-0 to the Blue Hens of Delaware on Friday evening at Delaware Mini-Stadium.
The Blue Hens put 22 shots on goal to just three for the Hornets, and controlled the run of play in their attacking third for most of the match. A Theresa Wappett free kick from 25 yards in the 14th minute that dipped over a four man wall but was saved by Hen keeper Annie Bevan was DSU's best opportunity to notch a tally.
"We're happy that this was another opportunity for us to get better," said Hornets head coach Nitan Soni, whose charges have gone nine hours of match time without being cautioned this season. "At halftime, our girls said they were glad for the opportunity to learn how to play at this speed, and I think they took a lot of positive away from this. This match will help us prepare to get better, and teach us how quickly we need to come out against Howard and starting conference play."
The Hornets open up Great West Conference play next Friday as they take on Howard at 7 p.m. at Alumni Stadium. Live stats and coverage will be available via DSUHornets.com
