Baltimore, Md. (May 3, 2009) ? The Delaware State Softball Team (22-22, 8-6 MEAC) split an all-important Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader with the Morgan State Bears (15-13, 7-7 MEAC) yesterday, in Baltimore, Md.
Poor pitching and lack of offense did the Hornets in during Game One. Starter Brittney Ruark had her third shaky outing in a row, allowing six runs in just three innings of work. Four of those runs came in the very first inning.
Down 6-1 after three innings, Megan Lambertz relieved Ruark and didn't allow a run. The Hornets rallied in the sixth and seventh innings due to poor defense by the Bears, scoring three runs to come within two runs at 6-4. However, MSU, with five errors in the contest, pulled through in the end with the crucial MEAC win.
Freshman Bre Parr led the Hornets with two hits in the contest while sophomore Andrea Waters drove in a run, her 21st of the season.
In game two, Ruark picked up the slack for DSU, throwing a complete-game while allowing just one run. The victory was her 15th of the season. That ties a career high for the Seaford, Del., native who also won 15 games in 2008.
Offensively, DSU still struggled but was able to score two runs late to take the 3-1 victory and the split of the MEAC doubleheader.
Freshman Casey Beighly led the DSU offense in game two, going 2-for-3. Tawny Reeger and Parr drove in runs for the Hornets who, again, capitalized off of three Morgan State defensive miscues.
The two teams were supposed to play a final game today but due to inclement weather, the game has been postponed.
