DOVER (April 5, 2009) ? DSU scored nine runs in the final three innings to take the third and final game against Maryland-Eastern Shore, 16-9, in Princess Anne, Md., today. With the victory, the Hornets improve to 2-1 in MEAC play and are 12-12 overall.
The scoring onslaught started in the second inning when freshman Bre Parr scored on a fielder's choice to give DSU the early 1-0 lead.
UMES rallied to take the lead in third inning as they scored three runs on three hits to take a two-run lead. The Hawks extended the lead in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two more runs to take a 5-1 advantage with just one inning to play.
The Hornets showed resilience, scoring a combined six runs in the sixth and seventh innings to regain the lead at 7-5.
The seesaw battle continued into the bottom half of the seventh as the Hawks scored two runs on a single through the left side to tie the game at seven.
The defending MEAC Champions responded with their biggest inning of the season to cap off a game in which they scored the most runs this season. The top of the eighth inning saw DSU score nine runs on four hits to bust the game wide open. Megan Lambertz started the scoring, hitting into a fielder's choice scoring two runs. The inning was capped off when Courtney Taylor hit the first homerun of her career to finish off an impressive come from behind win for the Hornets.
Starting pitcher Brittney Ruark started her third consecutive game and picked up her team-leading eighth win of the season.
Five DSU players had at least two hits, while four drove in at least two runs. Tawny Reeger led the way with three hits while Caroll drove in three RBI to help seal the win.
These two teams will finish the season series with a double-header this Wednesday, April 8, at the Hornets Nest. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
