TOWSON, MD --The Delaware State University women's tennis team battled hard but was defeated by Towson University, 4–3, on Saturday, March 7.
In doubles play, senior Lucia Casas Blas and junior Catherine Goldman delivered a strong performance at No. 1 Doubles, defeating Kiersten Tambe and Tamzin Pountney 6–2. However, Towson secured the doubles point after close matches at Nos. 2 and 3.
The Hornets responded with several strong performances in singles. Freshman Maite Bou Safont earned an impressive victory at No. 4 Singles, defeating Ashira Murray 6–4, 6–4. Freshman Alba Benedito also picked up her second win of the season with a straight-set victory over Chloe Courtnage at No. 5 Singles, 6–1, 6–3.
Sophomore Sia Mahajan highlighted the day with a remarkable comeback at No. 3 Singles. After dropping the first set and falling behind 0–3 in the third, Mahajan won six straight games in the third set to defeat Tamzin Pountney 2–6, 6–3, 6–3.
The Hornets will look to bounce back this week as they host Rider University on Thursday, March 12.
