The Delaware State Lady Hornets made program history on Sunday, March 29, defeating South Carolina State University for the first time ever in Norfolk, Va.
The Hornets came out strong, capturing the doubles point with decisive play. Junior
Catherine Goldman and sophomore
Sia Mahajan led the way at No. 1 doubles with a 6-2 win over Amalnathan and Lecoanet. Freshmen
Hannah Watkins and
Maite Bou Safont clinched the point at No. 3 doubles, defeating Rajaobelina and Nedeljkovic 6-4.
In singles, senior
Lucia Casas Blas extended the Hornets' lead, earning a straight-sets victory over Amalnathan, 6-3, 7-6. Sophomore
Sia Mahajan followed with a thrilling performance at No. 3, winning a physical battle in two tiebreak sets, 7-6, 7-6.
Freshmen
Alba Benedito and
Maite Bou Safont secured the remaining points for Delaware State. Benedito delivered a strong 6-4, 6-2 win over Rajaobelina at No. 5, while Bou Safont battled back for a dramatic three-set victory at No. 6, defeating Nedeljkovic 2-6, 7-5, 10-8.
Delaware State will return to action on Monday, March 30, as they face conference rival North Carolina Central.
