BALTIMORE, MD --Freshman Jaryn Sample and sophomore Joey Current each collected three hits, but the Delaware State Hornets fell to the UMBC Retrievers 13-7 on Wednesday.
Senior Peter Carreca (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Delaware State (3-13).
In addition to his three hits, Current had a triple to lead the Hornets, along with Sample's three base knocks. Senior Kodai Yaoita also helped out for Delaware State, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a home run, a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Delaware State plated two runs off of UMBC pitching, one of which was driven in on a run-scoring double off the bat of senior Chris Amparo.
The Retrievers failed to push any runs across before the Hornets offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Delaware State scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-RBI double from sophomore Evan Bouldin, which brought the Hornets lead to 5-0.
Delaware State's lead had disappeared once the ninth inning came around and turned into a 13-5 UMBC advantage, when the Hornets cut that deficit to 13-7. Delaware State added two runs, including one on a solo dinger off the bat of Yaoita. The ballgame ended with that ninth inning rally falling short. The Hornets out-hit the Retrievers at a 14-10 clip. Yaoita led the Hornets at the plate, going 1-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. UMBC was led offensively by freshman Wyatt, who went 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBI.
