DOVER --Sophomore Jack Messmore had everything working on Friday, striking out eight Le Moyne hitters over 5.1 innings of work to help power the Delaware State Hornets over the Dolphins 12-10.
In addition to his eight strikeouts, Messmore went 5.1 innings, giving up seven runs, six earned, on eight hits and walking four for Delaware State (2-11, 1-3, ).
Offensively, the Hornets were paced by senior Kodai Yaoita, who went 4-for-5 on the day with a triple and three RBI. Senior Chris Amparo put together a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Freshman Jaryn Sample also contributed for Delaware State, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 2-0, the Hornets first put runs on the board in the second inning. Delaware State scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of junior Chance Satcho.
The Dolphins then rallied to score three runs and take a 5-3 lead before the Hornets got back on the board in the fourth. Delaware State scored once on an RBI single off the bat of senior Jancarlos Colon, which tightened the Dolphins lead to 5-4.
Delaware State held the Dolphins off the board before rallying to grab a 7-5 lead in the fifth.
The Dolphins then evened up the ballgame at seven before Delaware State came back to reclaim their advantage in the sixth inning. bringing the score to 10-7 in favor of Delaware State.
Le Moyne got within 10-9 until the Hornets scored again in the seventh inning to stretch its lead to 12-9. Delaware State plated two runs off of Le Moyne pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of senior Krew Bouldin. Le Moyne put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Hornets still held on for the 12-10 win. The Delaware State pitching staff combined to strike out 14 Le Moyne hitters. Delaware State went 9-for-17 (.529) with runners in scoring position. Le Moyne was led offensively by senior Roden, who went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and six RBI. Senior M. Parker led the Dolphins pitching staff, throwing five innings of seven-run ball.
