ORANGEBURG, SC --The Delaware State men's basketball team shot 50 percent from three-point range, but fell to the South Carolina State Bulldogs 69-62 on the road Saturday.
The Hornets (12-14, 5-5) had three players score in double figures, led by Martaz Robinson, who had 16 points and six rebounds. Deywilk Tavarez tacked on 14 points, four assists and four steals and Jevin Muniz chipped in as well with 10 points and two steals.
The Delaware State defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 18 South Carolina State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 22 points on the other end of the floor. Tavarez's four steals led the way individually for the Hornets.
How It Happened
After falling behind 2-0, Delaware State went on a 7-0 run with 19:16 left in the first half to take a 7-2 lead. The Hornets then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 25-24.
South Carolina State kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 63-52 advantage before Delaware State went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Dean Shepherd's layup, to shrink the deficit to 63-60 with 1:03 to go in the contest. South Carolina State responded and outscored the Hornets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 69-62. Delaware State capitalized on 10 South Carolina State turnovers in the period, collecting 13 points off those turnovers. The Hornets put on a passing clinic, recording an assist on 60 percent of made baskets. The Delaware State defense forced 18 turnovers.
