BLACKSBURG, VA --Martaz Robinson collected 30 points, but the Delaware State men's basketball team fell to the Virginia Tech Hokies 83-60 on the road Monday.
Robinson added six rebounds to his 30 point game to lead the Hornets (0-1). Corey Perkins helped out with eight points, four assists and two steals and Kaseem Watson chipped in with nine points.
Led by Caleb Surgers' five offensive rebounds, Delaware State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in eight second chance points.
The Delaware State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Monday's game, forcing 16 Virginia Tech turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 14 points on the other end of the floor. Raymond Somerville led the way individually for the Hornets with three steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 29-11, Delaware State went on an 8-0 run with 7:20 left in the first half to narrow its deficit to 29-19. The Hornets continued to close the gap, cutting the Virginia Tech lead to 40-32 by the end of the first half.
Virginia Tech kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 49-36 advantage before Delaware State went on a 7-0 run to shrink the deficit to 49-43 with 13:51 to go in the contest. Virginia Tech responded and outscored the Hornets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 83-60. Delaware State capitalized on nine Virginia Tech turnovers in the period, collecting eight points off those turnovers.
