THE GAMEÂ
The suddenly streaking Hornets take on MEAC rival Morgan State in the 2023 Invesco QQQ HBCU Legacy Classic. After snapping a 15-game losing streak with an 88-85 overtime win at South Carolina State on Jan. 23, DSU has won its last three games to improve to 4-16 overall and 3-4 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. This game will not count in the 2022-23 MEAC standings. The Hornets are coming off a 71-66 victory at Coppin State on Monday.
Martaz Robinson continued his recent hot string, topping four double-figure scorers for the Hornets with 20 points on eight-for-17 shooting from the field, including two three-pointers. Robinson also led Delaware State with 10 rebounds to record his first collegiate "double-double." Robinson has scored 107 points in the last seven games (15.3 ppg) to raise his season average to 9.9.
Khyrie Staten came off the bench to add 13 points, including a mid-court shot to beat the first half buzzer, cutting Coppin State's lead to one (32-31) at the break.
Brandon Stone and
Cameron Stitt scored 10 points each as reserves for the Hornets. Stitt was four-for-seven from the field, including two three-pointers. The Hornet bench contributed 33 points in the game. Coppin State led by as many as nine in the first half before a three-pointer by
Brandon Stone and Staten's mid-court shot shifted momentum to the Hornets. There were three lead changes and five ties in the second half. Delaware State took the lead for good, 53-51, after two free throws by
Corey Perkins (9 points, 4 assists) at the 8:42 mark of the second half. The Hornets held their biggest lead, 65-56, on a Robinson free throw with 3:53 remaining in the game. Delaware State held a solid edge in rebounding 47-30 and sealed the win with 13-for-15 shooting at the free throw line. For the season, Stone is tops on the Hornets in scoring at 11.9 points per game and in rebounding with a 5.3 per game average. Robinson has climbed to second on the team in scoring (9.9 ppg) He's also tied for second on the Hornets in rebounding (4.7 pg) and shares the team lead with 24 steals. Fellow guard Â
Khyrie Staten is Delaware State's third leading scorer at 9.8 points per game, while
Jevin Muniz is fourth in scoring (8.5 ppg) and has a team-high 24 three-pointers. Â

Morgan State (11-11; 4-3 MEAC) currently sits in fourth place in the MEAC standings. The Bears have dropped two straight and three of their last four games, including a 72-58 home setback to MEAC co-leader Maryland-Eastern Shore in their most recent outing (Jan. 30). Morgan State features two of the MEAC's top three scorers. Isaiah Burke is second in the league with a 20.1 point per game average, while Malik Miller is third at 17.5 points per game. Miller is also the league's leading rebounder at 9.9 per game, while Burke has a MEAC high 78 three-pointers (3.5 per game).              Â

THE SERIES Â (MSU leads 64-45)
The Hornets and Bears are meeting for the second time in eight days. Delaware State posted a dramatic 64-62 victory over Morgan State on Jan. 28 in Dover, Del.
Martaz Robinson scored the winning points on a basket with 2.4 seconds left to play. Robinson led the Hornets in scoring with 17 points in the contest.
Brandon Stone came off the bench to add 12 points and lead the Hornets with seven rebounds. Isaiah Burke led three double-figure scorers for Morgan State with a game-high 18 points. Kamron Hobbs added 12 points and Daiquan Copeland 11 for the Bears. Morgan State had won two straight and 11 of the previous 12 meetings between the teams before last week's contest. The Bears swept the 2021-22 season series, winning 82-70 on their home court and 76-69 at Delaware State. The teams are scheduled to meet for a third time this season on Feb. 25 at Morgan State in Baltimore, Md.
