Box Score Princess Anne, Md. (Mar. 19, 2022) --- The Delaware State softball team was held to five hits in a doubleheader loss to Maryland-Eastern Shore in the Hornets' MEAC opening series today.
The Hawks allowed just two hits in an 8-0 victory in the opener, and gave up just three hits in a 2-1 win in game two.
Nola Mountain, Julia Garcia and Kelsie Ekstrom had two hits each to lead the Hawks'10-hit attack in game one.
Maryland-Eastern Shore scored first with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Hawks led 5-0 before scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal the win.
Jaelyn Baker and Kyle Johnson each singled off winning pitcher Nasya Goodman to account for Delaware State's two hits.
In the nightcap, the Hornets opened the scoring with a first inning run.
Jonah Cunnigan singled with one out, stole second and scored the game's first run on s one-out single by Baker.
Delaware State still led 1-0 before the Hawks pulled ahead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Hornets had runners on base in the fifth and seventh innings, but failed to score off UMES reliever Ameenah Ballenger.
Felicity Munoz and
Jade King also singled in the game for Delaware State.
The Hornets and Hawks will close out the series with a single game on Sunday.
