THE GAME
Delaware State (1-1; 0-0 MEAC) travels to next door Pennsylvania to face national power Villanova, ranked 16th in the Nov. 7 national Top 25 poll after competing in the NCAA Tournament Final Four last season. The Hornets are coming off a 104-67 win over Immaculata in their last outing on Nov. 10.  The point total was the most by the Hornets since a 107-48 victory over Cairn on Nov. 9, 2013. Newcomer Brandon Stone (sr.), a transfer from Robert Morris (Pa.), scored a game-high 25 points on 11-for-15 shooting from the field, including two-of-four on three-point shots. He also led all players with nine rebounds in the contest. Khyrie Staten (so.) set a career-high for the second straight game, tallying 21 points on seven field goals, including three three-pointers (3-7), and perfect shooting on four free throws for the Hornets. Staten also recorded six assists and four steals, also career highs. Newcomer Jevin Muniz (fr.) was five-for-seven from the field, including two-of-three on three-point attempts in a 12-point performance for Delaware State, while Corey Perkins (so.) came off the bench to match his career-high with 10 assists. Perkins also tied his career best with five steals, while chipping in six points. The Hornets broke open a close game with a late first half run to lead 47-29 at the break, and outscored the Mighty Macs 57-38 in the second half. Delaware State shot 60.5% from the field in the final 20 minutes, making good on 23 of their 38 second half shots. The Hornets turned 30 Immaculata turnovers into 35 points, while outscoring the Macs 52-24 in the paint and 20-6 on fast break points. Delaware State opened the 2022-23 season with a 95-57 loss at Virginia Tech on Nov. 7. Through two games this season, Stone is the team leader in scoring at 20.0 points per game, and in rebounding at 8.5 per contest. He is 18 for 28 from the field (.643) in the early going this season. Staten is the Hornets' No. 2 scorer at 18.5 points per game, while knocking down a team-high five three-point field goals.
