Dover, Del. (Oct. 20, 2022) --- The Delaware State women's basketball team will have plenty to prove in the 2022-23 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular season race.
The Lady Hornets have ben picked to finish eighth in the eight-team conference race, according to a poll of league head coaches and sports information representatives.
Defending MEAC regular season and tournament champ Howard University is the voters' choice to finish first in the standings during the upcoming season. The Lady Bison received eight of a possible 16 first place votes and 119 total points.
Norfolk State is second with four first place votes and 105 total points, followed by Coppin State (89 pts), Morgan State (85), Maryland-Eastern Shore (69), North Carolina Central (54), South Carolina State (30) and Delaware State (25).
Coppin State and Maryland Eastern Shore also received two first place votes each.
Delaware State will feature an almost entirely new look for the 2022-23 season.
Second-year head coach
E.C. Hill expects to have up to 14 new players on the roster when the season begins.
The list includes several NCAA Division I transfers and a former junior college standout.
Among the newcomers are Division I transfers
Jessica Martino (5-10 Guard-Forward /Manhattan, N.Y./Univ. Texas Rio Grande) and
Brishonne Tollie (6-0 Forward / Bartow, Fla./ SMU).
Brishonne's younger sister,
Tyshone Tollie, is also new to the Lady Hornets after previously starring at Florida Southwest State CC.
A newcomer with Delaware ties is also on the 2022-23 Lady Hornets' roster.
Breionna Dodson, a 6-0 forward from Chester, Pa., was a star at the Tatnal School in Wilmington, in addition to attending the Shipley School in nearby Bryn Mawr, Pa.
Also new to the Lady Hornets this season are former high school stars
Deyonce Thompson, a 5-10 guard-forward from Grand Rapids, Mich, and
Savannah Brooks, 5-9 Guard-Forward from Taneytown, Md.
Guard Jaia Alexander of Coppin State, the reigning MEAC Player-of-the-Year, is the voters' choice to capture the award again this season.
The Lady Hornets will tip-off their 26-game regular schedule on Nov. 2 at home against Georgian Court University.
